Your chronically-online Golden Globes recap
A look back on the night's wins, flops, jokes and more
On the whole, I usually think the Golden Globes suck. Unable to detach itself from the scandalous past few years, its negative association with The Hollywood Reporter as well as usually pretty mid humour throughout. Of course, it’s hard to say any part of awards season is ‘good’, and even harder to say what is real. If you’re not American and couldn’t watch the awards, I watched them for us all and here’s my chronically-online recap.
The Pre-Show Interviews:
You do not need to watch any other clip of the 90 minute pre-show other than this interview with Kieran Culkin. If anyone’s taking a knife and cutting right through the Hollywood facade, it’s Roy Roman.
The Opening Monologue:
I don’t like Nikki Glaser - I have an incredibly low supply of respect for anyone who chooses to perform in Israel. Having said that, she may have pulled the Globes back from the depths of Jo Koy’s absolute flop last year.
Here’s a mini-compilation of ten jokes from her opening that you’ll probably be hearing about over the next couple days.
The Award Presentations:
Super cheesy jokes, failing autocues and low chemistry between the presenting duos are always the case at any awards show, but there were some highlights that’ll probably get over-used online over the next week. Here they are for you to laugh at or maybe cringe at, too.
The Acting Acceptance Speeches:
They’re what we all love to see and all love to judge - the speeches from our favourite celebrities. Some great ones and some not worth mentioning, but here’s a brief rundown of the best moments from this year’s speeches.
The Bests:
I think it’s fair to say Emilia Perez won the Globes in time spent accepting awards alone. Huge win for Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, another great awards run for Baby Reindeer and Shogun, as well as unexpected win for Brazillian and Latvian films I’m Still Here and Flow. Here’s a list of those bests so you’re in the know this week.
Best Picture (Musical/Comedy): Emilia Perez
Best Picture (Drama): The Brutalist
Best Picture (Non-English Language): I’m Still Here
Best Picture (Animated): Flow
Best TV Series (Limited): Baby Reindeer
Best TV Series (Drama): Shogun
Best TV Series (Musical/Comedy): Hacks
Best Original Song: Emilia Perez with ‘El Mal’
Best Score: Challengers by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Best Screenplay: Conclave by Peter Straughan
Best Director: Brady Corbet for The Brutalist
That concludes your 10 minute Golden Globe recap - I’ll be doing the BAFTAs and the Oscars, so keep an eye out and stay subscribed.
